Active substance: Complex of peptides obtained form the swine's brain

Pharmacological effects: Cerebrolysin contains low-molecular biologically active neuropeptides, that penetrates through the blood-brain barrier and acts directly on the nerve cells. Cerebrolysin contributes to metabolic regulation, neuroprotection, functional neuromodulation and neurotrophic activity. Therapeutic effect of Cerebrolysin is associated with the following mechanism:
A)Metabolic regulation: Cerebrolysin increases the efficiency of aerobic energetic metabolism of the human brain, improves intracellular proteins synthesis

Pharmacological properties

Cerebrolysin ® contains low molecular weight biologically active neuropeptides, which cross the blood-brain barrier and act directly to nerve cells. The drug has a unique organ-multilateral action on the brain, which is manifested in the ability of Cerebrolysin ® in metabolic regulation, neuroprotection, functional neuromodulation and neurotrophic activity. Metabolic regulation of Cerebrolysin ® improves the efficiency of aerobic energy metabolism of the brain, improves the intracellular protein synthesis in the developing and aging brain. Neuroprotection Cerebrolysin ® protects neurons from the damaging effect of lactic acidosis, prevents the formation of free radicals and reduces the concentration of lipid peroxidation products on the model of ischemia - reperfusion, increases perezhivaemost and prevents neuronal death in hypoxia and ischemia, reduces the damaging effect of excitatory amino acid neurotoxicity (glutamate). Neurotrophic activity of Cerebrolysin ® - the only peptidergic nootropic drug with proven in vitro and in vivo neuron-specific neurotrophic activity similar to the action of natural factors of neuronal growth, but it manifests itself, in contrast, in the peripheral administration. Cerebrolysin ® stimulates the differentiation of neurons and neurite sprouting during postnatal brain development, support livelihoods, and the experience of neurons, protecting them from damaging influences, slows down and stops the process of neurodegeneration in an experimental model that reproduces the pathological changes that occur in Alzheimer's disease. Functional neuromodulation Cerebrolysin ® shows positive effects on cognitive function disorders, improves concentration, memory processes and playback information related to short-term memory, increases the ability to acquire and maintain skills that will intensify the process of mental activity, enhances mood, promotes positive emotions, thus offering modulatory effects on behavior. Multimodal, neuron-specific effect of Cerebrolysin ® established in numerous experimental studies, clinical efficacy is confirmed in prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials conducted with the requirements of GCP in a number of international centers for the past 5 years.

Pharmacokinetics

The complex composition of Cerebrolysin ®, the active fraction of which consists of a balanced and stable mixture of biologically active oligopeptides having a total polyfunctional action, does not allow for the usual pharmacokinetic analysis of individual components. Under these conditions, some insight on the pharmacokinetics of Cerebrolysin ® can only be obtained indirectly. So, it was found that after a single injection of specific neurotrophic activity of plasma may persist for 8 hours.

Indications for use

Various forms of neurological and psychiatric, including neyropediatricheskoy psihogerontologicheskoy and pathology, accompanied by progressive cognitive and violation of intellectual-mental features: • chronic cerebrovascular pathology (encephalopathy); • ischemic stroke (acute phase and convalescence); • traumatic brain injury (traumatic brain injury, concussion, post-surgery on the brain); • mental retardation in children; • disorders associated with attention deficit in children; • dementia syndromes of different genesis (presenile dementia - Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia of Alzheimer type) vascular dementia (multiinfarktnaya form), mixed forms of dementia; • endogenous depression resistant to antidepressants.

Dosage and administration

Applies only parenterally: • by intramuscular injection (1.5 mL), • or intravenous drip infusion (10-60 ml). Dose and duration of treatment depend on the nature, severity, and the age of the patient. The standard duration of injection - 4 weeks (at least 5 injections per week, if possible, daily). In acute conditions (ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury, complications of neurosurgical operations) should enter Cerebrolysin intravenous drip in a daily dose of 10-60 mL in 100-250 mL of saline, for 60-90 minutes. Course duration of 10-25 days. In the residual period of stroke and traumatic brain injury Cerebrolysin ® given intravenously, 5-10 ml for 20-30 days. When psychoorganic syndrome (dementia, depression) - intravenous infusion of 5-10 ml for, respectively, 20-25 and 10-15 days. In practice neyropediatricheskoy - 1-2 ml (1 ml per 10 kg body weight) intramuscularly daily for a month with a recurrence rate 2-3 times a year.

Side effects

Cerebrolysin ® is one of the safest drugs. Low molecular weight of its constituent neuropeptides excludes the possibility of anaphylactic reactions. The drug is not mutagenic, teratogenic, pyrogenic and allergenic effects. With increased individual sensitivity is very rapid infusion of Cerebrolysin ® may cause a slight increase in temperature. Adverse reactions were extremely rare, short-lived and do not pose a risk to the patient.

Contraindications

• acute renal failure, • status epilepticus. With careful preparation is prescribed for allergic diathesis, major seizures, in the first three months of pregnancy

Interaction with other medicinal products

Simultaneous use of antidepressant medication in combination with Cerebrolysin ® may increase their action.
